There is something really satisfying about figuring out the best way to get from here to there on public transit, especially if you are in a setting where public transit is faster than going by car. Buses in Lisbon are unreliable. Usually, my bus to tai chi from the train station on Saturday mornings is on time. Today, it was 15 minutes late, and then it took 20 minutes to make it partway across town. Last month, I finally pulled myself together enough to calculate how much I spend on public transit in a month, so I could see if a monthly pass was a better deal. It turns out that it is. Since I am now using the monthly pass, I don't need to stress about the cost of transferring a lot, and that means that I can try replacing part of my bus trip with the metro. That will take me from one train station to another train station. From there, I can either take one of several buses, a tram, or the train. The train doesn't compete with cars, so if I can make the transfer in time, the train is definitely my preference. We'll see, though. I have about 25 minutes from when my train arrives until the next train leaves. Supposedly, it will only take 9 minutes to get from one train station to another, but we'll see.
