One of the guys from the construction company came today to check out the stone wall that needs work on the side of the house. He wanted to take the stones from my garden for the wall, but I said I needed them, so he's going to find other ones. I hope. The landscaper has been looking for stone with no luck. So, anyway, we'll see. The contractor also said that someone would come by in a few days to work on the bathroom. It was funny, as the contractor felt that my Portuguese was pretty good (it isn't that good, but my pronunciation is good, which makes it seem like I am much better than I am) and thought that I was better at it than Joel. I'm not. However, I had to explain that I just talk more than Joel in general. I'm dithering about asking the landscaper if she does stuff like removing weeds along our wall or if she knows someone who could. Sometimes the city takes care of it, but I feel like they are pretty out of control. But there are so many things that need to be done. Ugh.

Anyway, I also got a bit more sewing done on the shirts and cut out a bag and lining that I can work on while going to and from neurofeedback on Wednesday.

The newest painting I'm working on is going well. I did some very pretty zentangle all around the edge to make an oval frame. Tomorrow, I need to paint some flowers in the middle. If I can get it to work out, that will wrap up this piece. I'll do something very similar for the next one, but instead of painting flowers, I'll paint a wild strawberry plant, since my friend grows them.

I finished up the podcast, and a lot of the rest of the stuff on my to do list isn't super ultra pressing, so I think I'm going to finish sewing some trim onto one of my t-shirts. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to finish up the two shirts that are hanging around half finished. It looks like the fabric store will be open on Saturday, so I'll try to swing by there to see what they have.

Well, I'm probably a bit late to this, but Tales From The Gas Station is pretty amazing. It is a web story that was made into books. It is like a cross between old Stephen King and Dungeon Crawler Carl or maybe Murderbot. A great twist just showed up.

In other news, the kumihimo weaving has gotten to the end of several bobbins. I'm pleased with it and interested to see how things work out with it.

The EEG

lillilah: (Default)
The EEG says that a different part of my brain is overactive now. I'm not surprised that this whole thing requires a bit of fine tuning. I'm fixing it with a totally ridiculous method. I _am_ surprised that it worked so well, as it seems to have turned down the volume on some of the other areas that are having trouble. At this point, I'm not convinced that I'm going to magically become better due to this treatment, but I do think I might stop getting worse. That is a huge improvement, anyway.

In somewhat unrelated news, I sewed the rickrack on the pin and needle wallet, which I'm totally happy with. Also, (in less unrelated news) I told the neurofeedback place that I would start next week, not this week, as it is too stressful to go there twice in a week. Often, I just give in, but I didn't this time. Yay!
lillilah: (Default)
I went upstairs to our sewing area to see if the cord I have been making is long enough for the place I wanted to put it on a t-shirt (it isn't), and I got distracted thinking about possible sewing for tomorrow. Then, I found some felt that I was going to use to make a little pin and needle wallet, and I realized it matched well with some other fabric I had just got for sleeping pants. I was thinking about how I would make the needle case and got out the fabric to see how it would fit. And, then, since I had it out, I cut the piece of fabric. And then, I was testing out how it would go over the edges of the piece of felt, and did some pinning, and then sewing, and then I had made most of the pin and needle wallet. So, I went through our bag of trim and found a piece of shiny blue rickrack that can go on the outside, a matching fabric-covered button (which a good friend gave me but I haven't used because it isn't washing machine safe), and some elastic to make a closure. Now, I have everything I need to take the project with me on the train into town tomorrow to get the report from the neurologist at the neurofeedback clinic. The downside is that it is 3pm, and I still haven't had breakfast, so I need to get on that.
lillilah: (Default)
I wasn't able to sew on the train today, but I did learn a lot. I need to have a separate bag that contains my sewing that I can take out of my backpack while waiting on the platform. Probably, the strap needs to be long enough so that I can sling it across my body, so I don't have to worry about it slipping off. Then, I need to have separate packets of sewing in the bag, so that I can reach in, grab a packet and immediately work on it without requiring any other sorting of things. The train is so packed that I do not have enough space to sort anything. I need to have everything sorted beforehand. Still, I got some sewing done before and after tai chi, which was good. I'll try to get some things sorted out for next week.
lillilah: (Default)
I'm excited about this plan to do some crafting on the train. Of course, I need to prepare everything in advance so that the amount of movement (beyond moving my hands for sewing) is minimal, since the trains are crowded. However, I think I've got a good plan set up. Of course, with all these projects, I'll need tools and supplies, so I've ordered a bunch of those. I also will need to make some things, like a needle case and one of those pincushions that you can wear on your wrist. Those will be fun too. I'm getting a batch of sewing (mainly applique (sewing a decorative piece of fabric onto another piece of fabric)) ready. Of course, now that I've got this whole plan, it looks like I won't have to go in for neurofeedback next week. That's fine. I'll still go in to town on Saturdays, and there is nothing stopping me from sitting out in the sun and sewing too.

Yay! Sun!

It was nice enough today that I could hang laundry out and go for a nice walk in the sunshine. It is a bit chilly here, but not bad at all. And it is not raining!!!

In other news, I finished a second pair of sleep pants. I'm hoping that I can get some sleep shirts made soon, although we'll see how that goes. I have an EEG tomorrow (to check on my progress with the neurofeedback) and then neurofeedback the next day, so that is two days when most of my time will be spent in transit. I haven't found anything terribly productive that I can do on transit, so I just listen to books. I'm just too wound up to be able to focus on anything that requires brain power, and I can't see well enough to do embroidery. For some reason, crochet stresses me out. Maybe if I did the same thing over and over? I don't imagine that making socks would work if my brain wasn't working, so all I can imagine is maybe crocheting hats or blankets or something. I'll ask Joel if there is anything that would be useful like that. Update: The AI suggested hand stitching bags, which I could do, and kumihimo (making fancy braided cords). I'm pretty into this. I could make all kinds of patchwork/quilted bags to replace all the failing ziplock bags that I keep so many things in. It looks like I could do kumihimo with a disk that holds the yarn or whatever I would use for the cord. The cord can be round or flat and would work for trim or as a shoulder strap for the little patchwork bags. (Would be nice if I wanted a bag for around the house instead of carrying my satchel, since I don't have pockets, to carry my phone.) Anyway, I think I might go with this.

I really enjoy Indiana Jones movies and other action movies with stupid plots that somehow still are fun. Sadly, they don't seem to be fun in book form. I'm not sure if it is because they take the stupid "this artifact was given to humans by aliens to put on top of the pyramids to protect Earth from killer sunspots" too seriously or if it is just bad writing. I also hate cartoonishly evil villains. So, yesterday, I was listening to this stupid action book when the evil villain appears, and he is just so cartoonishly evil. He is disfigured, colluding with Nazis, etc. It was so awful that I had to stop. But I wanted to have a book to listen to the rest of the way home. So, since I had recently bought all the published Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks and downloaded the first one to make sure it worked, I started listening to that. It is just as good as I remember. And one of the funny things, now that I think about it, is that the bad guys are way less cartoonish (even with the ridiculous premise of the story) than the bad guy in that adventure book. The bad guys might be ridiculous, but they also have feelings and their own problems. You can totally empathize with them.

So, I'm going to finish that before moving on to the next book on my list. Maybe I'll try the western next. Since I have three books that I would really like to read on hold, I might have to institute some kind of plan to place books with long wait lists on hold as soon as I make the list of books to read for the month. Hmmm....

In other news, I finished a pair of pajama pants. Yay! I'm hoping to have some time to finish up the second pair tomorrow. I need to balance that with the time it will take to finish this month's podcast episode. And, of course, there is a ton of other sewing to do too. I guess I need to remember that unlike a lot of my hobbies, sewing is something that doesn't just repeat every month, so if I manage to get something done, it is actually done. And I really need these new clothes.

Sewing

I realized that I can't hold off on making sleeping clothes until after I have finished the decorations for the t-shirts, because it will take just too damn long, and my sleeping clothes are really falling apart. I need to wash the new fabric I got for this project, but that is easier said than done, as unfortunately, there are no signs it will ever stop raining here. Tonight, we are supposed to have super strong winds, and Lisbon regularly floods, which is sounds like it is doing again now. Apparently, all the reservoirs in the country are completely full. Joel says that all this rain may mean more wild fires this summer, as everything will be so overgrown. Anyway, I may have to just suck it up and hang the fabric to dry inside, although there isn't a ton of room on the drying rack. Oh, well. I guess there isn't that much fabric. Well, tomorrow is the dentist, which I am looking forward to less than usual, as my good dentist left, so I have a new one. I might have to listen to something more calming than Brother Cadfael for this (I'm stressed by the bickering with the other monks right now).

I'm nearly done with the waterfall painting for my aunt. I only have enough energy for about an hour and a half of painting at a time, though. Maybe because of all the detail. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it. I didn't have any plans for a painting for Joel, but after some consultation, we decided that I could paint a picture of a boar that one of Joel's World of Warcraft characters had as a hunting companion.

In good news, the electrician came, fixed the fan in the bathroom (full of cruft, not actually broken) and the light over the front door (just needed a new lightbulb, but the cover is hard to remove), removed the lamp from the yard (I was worried that it might have live wires and didn't want anything to happen to one of us if it did), and installed a surge protector on the main electrical panel, so that we don't need to worry that power outages will destroy any more of our appliances, like they did the water heater. Yay!!

On Friday, the landscaper will come. We're still hoping the other contractor will come and fix the exterior stone wall and the bathroom, but I don't think they have tons of time and would like the raised bed done sooner. They keep asking questions, so I can tell they are really interested. Anyway, I'm hoping the landscaper can install some raised beds and maybe also put in some additional soil or otherwise suggest something for the part of the yard that was under the chicken coop, as we have a few inches (or more) of standing water there when it rains. We'll see. Ultimately, I'd like raised beds and trellises in a bunch of places in the yard. I think I'll start with just a few things and see how it goes.

In sewing news, Joel and I went through our fabric stockpile on Monday and reorganized it so that I could order other stuff that we need. Well, it turns out that we don't need much, beyond black thread. However, since I have material for two pairs of sleep pants and want three, I ordered some cheap cotton for those plus t-shirt material for three shirts to go with them. My sleeping shirts are just in tatters. I also discovered when we were sorting that I already had cut out two shirts to replace a couple that are also in tatters. So, my first project is to finish those. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, so I'm just doing one step a day. So far, it is working.
lillilah: (Default)
I made a pattern for a vest/jacket and needed to test it, so today, I pulled out some material that will work as a lining, cut it out, and sewed it up. It fits pretty well. Thanks to some helpful advice, I won't put darts in the front, and while there is room in the back, I think I'll just cut the pattern more narrow in that part. I'll need to do so under the arms too, as there is way too much material, and even though I made the arm holes pretty big, they are definitely not big enough. So, now I have a list of what needs to be changed. I can hopefully do that in the next few days and then, when I've got the pattern set, can work on the sleeves. Normally, I wouldn't line the sleeves, but I might for this pattern, just so I can attach them to the lining to make sure that the pattern fits okay with them.

Moody

I've been more fussy and moody the last couple of days. I'm pretty sure it is hormones. Anyway, I'm going to keep working on the zentangle drawing/painting today and now that we have the pattern/tracing paper that we ordered, I might copy the pattern I want to use for my jackets and get to work on that.
lillilah: (Default)
I have finished the portrait! It is done!!!! I'm so happy! It isn't the best thing I have ever painted, but I never have to try to get it to work again. It is such a relief.

That's one less thing I need to do, so I can work a bit more on sewing. I finished the two pairs of winter pants and my "sleeping hat". I don't have anything besides the normal stuff until after the new year, so I can hopefully get to work on some of the much harder projects. The winter hat will be easy. Then, I need to make a new satchel and two jackets. I have a jacket pattern that I will use as the base design. I think I'll line them with either the same linen/cotton blend that I'm using or some other cotton. I'll see what I've got. I might have to buy something, but that would be okay. I just don't want something that is cold and slippery. Anyway, I expect that these things will take _much_ longer to make. Any kind of purse takes forever. Lots of pockets to make. However, I think this one will be a bit easier than the previous one, as I won't have dividers. Hopefully, it will go okay.

Pants!

My psychologist and I worked on figuring out how to explain my issues to the physical therapist. I go back on Monday, so hopefully, our plan will help. * crosses fingers *

In happier news, I cut out two pairs of yoga pants from the warm, winter fabric that I bought for them. Hopefully, it will work out. It seems stretchy enough, and I cut the pattern a bit bigger for the bulkier material. I also got them all pinned. If all goes well, I should be able to sew up at least one pair tomorrow.
lillilah: (Default)
Had another neurofeedback appointment. Went less well than previously. I struggled more to make good brain waves. Physical therapy was stressful, as I get the impression that the nice physical therapist thinks I'm anxious about walking rather than understanding that I have anxiety problems. Anyway, I'll talk to my psychologist about how to explain to him.

After coming home and zoning out for a while, I sewed up another pair of underwear, so those are done. I'm going to work on the winter pants now, as it is winter, and I need them. Also, I'm going to use some of the extra fabric to make a new winter hat and a new sleeping hat, which I pull down over my eyes when I sleep. It started out as something to help cope with the light at night in Russia in summer, and now, I just always use it when I sleep. However, when I have to wash it, I'd like to be able to have a second one. I need a new winter hat, because the one from Russia has shrunk too much from a lot of washings, and I can't use it anymore.

No news on the water heater front.

I decided last night to try hiring a virtual assistant rather than calling repair places myself. A virtual assistant is like a personal assistant you hire as a freelancer. There are websites that handle it, much like ebay does with selling. So, this morning, I got up, set up the job, and posted it. You can ask specific people to look at the job, and I chose one who was in Portugal and had a lot of good reviews. She asked a lot of intelligent questions, then said she would take the job. After some more questions, she disappeared for a while. A few hours later, she had an appointment for us with a repair person. Repair person came, looked at the water heater, and said that it was installed so closely to the ceiling that it is really really hard to work on. He is going to have to cut away the plastic top on it since there is no other way to get at the components. It is going to probably be messy and look ugly after. Anyway, he didn't have the right tools, but he seemed like a nice guy. Virtual assistant said that she'll keep working on the job until the water heater is fixed. We're paying her $20 for the job. There will be a nice tip too.

Most of the day, I was pretty traumatized because of new things and talking with people and not having any idea what was going on. I worked on writing and maybe some other stuff, but really not much. By evening, I finally decided it was time to do something more productive, especially since I had wanted to work on some sewing. So, I went upstairs and finished sewing one pair of underwear from the bag of half sewn things.

Tomorrow, I go back into town for neurofeedback and physical therapy. I'm hoping I can swing by a post office, send out a painting, and find out if I can use Portuguese international stamps to send them in the future. That would be so nice!
lillilah: (Default)
I consolidated two big boxes that had stuff from the solar panel installation down to one box that was small enough to fit in the last open cubby in the new shelves. Yay! Of course, it had a bunch of huge pieces of styrofoam in it, so those are sitting in the living room now waiting to go to the recycle. However, the boxes are cut up, so that is something.

Finally, I finished the new podcast: Christmas songs, some of which are pretty snarky. I still have a few things to do for it, but the time-consuming part is done. Yay!

With those things done, I'm going to get to work on sewing (and finishing up that portrait). I could work on the art rail, but honestly, I need new pants more right now. Once I've finished this round of stuff, then I can work on the art rail with Joel. I am so looking forward to getting this sewing done!

Lastly, I've been working on backstory for the space serial, and as I plan it out with the AI, I can see how much better the story will be with these fleshed out backstories. I realize, though, that a lot of my characters are really short. Hmm.... I'll need to balance that out. Anyway, still lots to do, but progress is being made.

Oh! Extra-lastly, I got the webpage of approved maintenance people for the brand of water heater we have, so I'll start calling them tomorrow. I have a less than nice plan for if that doesn't work.

Check!

I told my teacher that I will stop taking classes for a while. Phew! So that is done. I'm not sure how many more classes I have, but at least I don't need to worry about that. I'm working through all the random little things that need to be done now before my walk. Then, I'll cut out some shirts. It will be nice to make progress on that.

Junk!

Oct. 23rd, 2024 07:43 pm
lillilah: (Default)
Happily, a (very nice) friend of Joel's came today and took away two propane containers left by the previous owners. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the hammock frame taken apart, so we couldn't get rid of that too. However, we have slightly less junk in the yard. Yay!

Not too much other news. I am less moody today, but probably will be more unstable tomorrow. I still think I am doing better than I was in Russia in late October, though. I'm making a lot of effort to get out for my walks when it is sunny, which will hopefully help.

I think I've managed to get the last couple of divots in the wall by my desk filled, so that is done, and Joel and I went over my designs for jackets and another vest today. I ordered a bit more fabric for the vest. I'm not sure exactly what to work on, so I'm mainly just getting a lot of little things done. However, it may be time to get to work sewing, as I have t-shirts that are falling apart, a bag of half-finished clothes to work on, plus the jackets and a new purse to work on.
