Today, I worked on the box to hold my paints, which is coming right along, and caulking the second upstairs window, since it may rain tomorrow. To get to the window, I had to move the huge box of cardboard boxes. Once the caulking was done, I really didn't want to move that big box back, since it blocks all the airflow from downstairs. So, I spent at least an hour cutting down cardboard boxes to fit into other boxes. We put two of them up on the ledge, and I made a pile with one of the other box of boxes. There are six boxes of cut down boxes up there. Three are up on ledges and two are stacked neatly under the window, which leaves only one totally overflowing box. What I should do is sit down with a boxcutter, the box of cardboard, and an audiobook and chop up all the cardboard into little pieces. The compost is supposed to be five parts brown material (shredded cardboard) to one part green material (kitchen scraps). I'm lucky if it is one to one. Since I am burying the compost ("pit composting"), it is a bit more tolerant of the wrong ratio. However, if I had a box full of shredded cardboard, then it would be much easier to dump the appropriate amount into the hole. We'll see. I don't love that kind of work. I might be able to get Joel to do it. Anyway, I would love to get through some of those boxes of boxes, since we could really use the space they are taking up. I'm sure we will eventually.
