As mentioned previously, I'm painting birthday cards (until I am unhappy about it, when I'll stop). It is a really fun process to just make a bunch of fun, weird, kind of crazy paintings, and needing to do a bunch means that I can't spend 6 months on every one of them. I've been looking at abstract painting tutorials (although I don't think they are actually abstract, since they look exactly like what they are supposed to be but with unexpected colors), and there are some really cool, simple ones out there. (I just spent half an hour looking up other tutorials and techniques and now have about 30 more links to birthday card ideas.) My father in law is having a birthday soon, and he isn't the easiest person to paint a card for, since he's eccentric. However, he was recently attacked by an owl, and I thought he would be really amused if I painted him a card with an owl. I found a cool tutorial and painted a background, but then I started to worry if it was actually going to be funny. Happily, I contacted Joel's mom, and she agreed that he would think it was funny. So, phew! I'll try to remember to post a photo of the owl card here when I'm done.
